At The Hyde School, we are committed to the holistic development of all our children. The primary aim of PSHE is to ensure all children are equipped to make positive choices that affect their mental and physical health, as well as the ability to build positive relationships with others, underpinned by mutual respect and tolerance. These are all key skills required to lead happy, healthy lives and to thrive, as well as to build resilience through life’s challenges and celebrate personal successes.
PSHE is taught discreetly from Early Years through to Year 6 through the use of the Jigsaw Programme but we also believe that its key strands (Health and Wellbeing, Relationships Education and Living in the Wider World) should permeate through everyday interactions in school and across all areas of the curriculum. Often PSHE requires the sensitive handling of children’s emotions and their understanding of the world, therefore we believe that the class teacher is primarily equipped to deliver this. In addition to in class teaching, the children enormously benefit from weekly circle times with the school’s Senior Learning Mentor. In EYFS and KS1 children also benefit from daily check-ins using 'The Zones of Regulation' resources. Children also regularly partake in meaningful workshops provided by visitors, as well as engage in local trips to see the impact of active citizenship on the community they belong to.
We follow the Early Years Framework and the PSHE curriculum for Key Stage 1 and 2 naturally builds upon the skills and knowledge children acquire through the Prime Areas in the EYFS (Communication and Language, Physical Development and Personal, Social and Emotional Development), as well as scientific and moral concepts taught through Understanding the World. From September 2020, it has been compulsory to teach Health Education and Relationships Education in primary schools. We have developed a bespoke curriculum from Years 1 - 6. This is comprised of the Jigsaw programme, guidance and support provided from the PSHE Association, Health Education Partnership, the government’s guidance on Relationship Education, Relationship and Sex Education, and Health Education , as well as addressing the specific needs of the community we work with.
