Music education started long before your child started at this school - did you know that a baby will recognise music that they heard whilst in the womb? Throughout our lives we continue our musical experience to develop self-expression, confidence and creativity. Music crosses boundaries. It is a language for everyone that encompasses history, culture, religion and more.
At The Hyde, we engage and inspire children to appreciate a wide range of musical styles. Music is part of our everyday life at our school. Children have the opportunity to hear world-class musicians through visits to hear the London Symphony orchestra – both virtually and in real life – as well as visiting world-class music venues like the Royal Albert Hall. We work closely with BEAT (Barnet Education Arts Trust) to provide whole class and individual tuition for a range of instruments. As well as special events marking Harvest, Christmas and end of year shows, we also take part in Borough Music Festivals at the Arts Depot, Sign2Sing and perform at our local old people’s home. The Hyde has been awarded the Platinum Arts Mark Award which recognises the significance of Arts education in the school.
Each year group has a specific unit of work linked to the National Curriculum and EYFS Statutory Framework. Children will listen to, perform and compose music as individuals and in groups. They will learn the Interrelated Dimensions of Music (pulse, rhythm, pitch, tempo, duration, dynamics, timbre, texture and notation) whilst developing creativity and critical thinking skills – helping them to talk about what music they like and why. Children are taught a wide range of songs from across the world and this leads to further opportunities to perform. Individual music lessons are also available for a range of instruments, including piano, guitar and drums.
