Art is so much more than just drawing pictures! It gives children opportunities to develop their creativity, critical thinking and learn skills that can be applied in all areas of their learning. There is no such thing as a wrong answer in art and this empowers children to have amazing freedom to create, use their imagination and be successful.
At The Hyde School we are incredibly lucky to have a wealth of art galleries on our doorstep which, as part of our Urban Adventure Curriculum, are an invaluable resource. There is an artist in residence who works alongside all our children and families, and we have close links with the Arts Depot and we have collaborated in numerous projects with them. We think carefully about the artists that we use and choose a range that represents our school and community. As a result, we are the proud holders of the Arts Mark Platinum Award which recognises the high quality arts education that happens in this school.
Early Years children follow a curriculum based on their needs and interests which ensures they are developmentally ready for art teaching in the National Curriculum. This means that as well as having free access to experiment, create and express themselves in the provision they are also developing their fine and gross motor skills, core stability, upper body strength as well as their speaking, listening and attention skills. From Year 1–6 the children will learn 3 different techniques each year and have the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge. Teachers use The Hyde school’s progression documents to ensure the pitch of the work builds on the children’s prior learning. All techniques are taught with reference to artists, craftspeople or designers and we ensure, where possible, that these are relevant and inspiring individuals for our children. Sketchbooks are used from Year 2 for children to rehearse and practise key skills.
