Prevent Strategy

Prevent Duty Statement

The Hyde School is fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children and young people. We recognise that extremism and radicalisation are safeguarding concerns and can place children and young people at risk of significant harm.

In line with Section 26 of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, the school has due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism. This duty is known as the Prevent Duty and forms part of our wider safeguarding responsibilities.

Understanding Extremism and Radicalisation

Radicalisation is the process by which individuals may come to support extremist ideologies or engage in extremist activity. Children and young people may be vulnerable due to a range of factors, including:

  • Discomfort about their place in society or a crisis of identity

  • Low self-esteem or feelings of isolation

  • Experiences of racism, discrimination, family breakdown, or other personal difficulties

  • Association with a new or different group of friends, sometimes older

  • Exposure to extremist ideologies that legitimise or promote violence

  • Accessing extremist literature or violent extremist websites

  • Rejection of civic life and democratic values

  • A range of perceived grievances where non-violent responses appear ineffective

These factors do not necessarily mean a child is being radicalised, but they may increase vulnerability and require careful consideration and support.

Our Approach at The Hyde School

The Hyde School aims to protect pupils from radicalisation by:

  • Providing a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment where pupils feel valued and listened to

  • Promoting fundamental British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs

  • Encouraging critical thinking and open discussion so pupils can challenge extremist views and misinformation

  • Embedding Prevent within our safeguarding, curriculum, and pastoral systems

Staff Training and Safeguarding Procedures

All staff receive safeguarding training that includes awareness of the Prevent Duty. Staff are trained to identify potential indicators of vulnerability to radicalisation and understand how to respond appropriately.

Concerns relating to extremism or radicalisation are treated in the same way as other safeguarding concerns and are managed in accordance with our Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy and pan-London Safeguarding Children Procedures, as adopted by the Barnet Safeguarding Children Partnership.

Referrals and Support

Where there are safeguarding concerns that a child or young person may be at risk of radicalisation, referrals are made following local and national guidance.

  • Referrals may be made using the Prevent National Referral Form and submitted to:
    preventreferrals@met.pnn.police.uk

  • If there is an immediate risk of harm, the Police should be contacted on 999

  • Concerns about possible involvement in terrorist activity can be reported to the National Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321

Further information is available via Barnet Council – Radicalisation and Prevent.

Partnership Working

The Hyde School works in partnership with parents, carers, the Local Authority, and external agencies to ensure children and young people receive appropriate support and protection.
