Vision

Learning a new language gives children a fresh perspective on the world and helps them understand their own culture and those of others. At The Hyde, we foster curiosity for languages and encourage children to share their knowledge. We focus on Spanish and the languages spoken at home, laying the foundations for future language learning and broadening children’s understanding of the world. Our lessons develop key communication skills, including speaking and listening, while providing a rich educational, cultural, and social experience.

Languages at The Hyde

We are lucky enough to have a native Spanish-speaking teacher, who delivers most of our Spanish lessons from year 2 to year 6, and vocabulary is “dripped” into the school day- for example, through colour and number splat games in the playground. Through the online learning platform Languagenut, children develop speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in Spanish. They learn patterns in sounds through songs, games, and rhymes, listening attentively and demonstrating understanding by joining in and responding. As a school, we have a shared love of reading familiar texts, and incorporating these into Spanish lessons allows children to reinforce previously taught vocabulary and explore new language in context.

How We Teach Languages at The Hyde

At The Hyde, we teach Spanish across Key Stage 2, with lessons delivered by a native Spanish-speaking teacher. In Year 2 and beyond, children receive dedicated lessons where we embed vocabulary throughout the school day, using fun, practical activities such as colour and number splat games in the playground. Children also use the online learning platform Languagenut to develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in Spanish. Our approach focuses on listening and responding to language patterns through songs, games, and rhymes, helping children gain confidence in using the language. We also incorporate familiar texts, allowing children to practise and extend vocabulary in context while connecting new language to stories they already know and enjoy.
