History

Vision

History is all around us—hidden in your family stories, your local area, and the wider world. The past has shaped the world we live in today, and by learning about it, we can understand how we got here. History also helps us see that our actions today can shape the future, giving us the power to make a difference. We learn history to better understand the world we live in and to appreciate how our actions can shape the future.

History at The Hyde

At The Hyde School, we believe that children should be curious about the past and develop the skills to critically analyse and interpret evidence, helping them see themselves as young historians. Through high-quality history lessons, we aim to encourage deeper-level thinking and help children develop a strong sense of their own identity. History teaching at The Hyde is further enriched through experiences, trips and visitors that bring the subject to life and inspire a desire to learn more. Our local links with the RAF Museum Hendon provide an excellent example of how we connect learning to real-world contexts and because we are lucky enough to be situated in London, we make the most of having so many interesting museums close by too.

How We Deliver the Curriculum

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework and the National Curriculum for History. As a school, we have developed our own clear progression of historical knowledge, skills, and key vocabulary. From the Early Years, children begin by exploring their own personal history, family, and communities. This understanding forms the foundation for their broader historical learning. As pupils move through the school, they develop chronological understanding, enquiry skills, and knowledge of significant people, places, and periods. Children also learn to interpret evidence, critically analyse sources, question their reliability, and organise and communicate their learning effectively.
